2003 6.0l Powerstroke oil leak at rear of engine.

Hey guys it's AJ. I'm gonna cover a very common issue on the 2003- early 2004 6.0l Powerstrokes. These engines will develop oil leaks that come down the rear of the engine and sometimes can be misdiagnosed as a rear main seal by an unexperienced mechanic. 90% of the time an oil leak coming down the rear of the engine on an early 6.0 is caused by a bad ICP sensor. The ICP sensor tells the ECM how much injection pressure (high pressure oil) is being produced by the high pressure oil pump. On early 6.0s the sensor is on the top of the engine in the rear where as the sensor is on the passenger side valve cover in the lat 04-07 engines. The most common failure is that the sensor begins leaking through the electrical connector of the sensor. Here... [More]

More Duramax problems LLY Headgasket failure

by aj 3. May 2012 20:21
Hey guys we've got another Duramax torn down and it's not pretty. This particular engine is an 04 LLY with around 225,000 miles. It was brought in for a no start. As the engine would build fuel rail pressure it would begin to smoke heavily and sounded like it was locking down. We removed the glow plugs and cranked the engine over and 3 glow plug holes were blowing out a coolant/oil mixture. We decided to pull the engine. Here's Zach getting the engine ready to come out. Gettin physical with her. Just making real gutteral sounds. Got her on the ground. The owner was skeptical of my diagnosis because his driver had told him that it hadn't smoked or anything and that it had shut down like they cut the key off. After seeing the coolan... [More]

E40D lasts 500,000 miles and then some

by aj 2. May 2012 00:21
Hey guys this is AJ again for 441 Diesel. I just had to upload some pics from this job just to say how badass the Ford E40D transmission is. This truck DROVE in with a helluva noise coming from underneath and after inspecting we determined the transmission was the issue. We were right... The entire bellhousing was broken around the transmission and we removed the transmission without removing any transmission to engine bolts! The craziest thing is that the owner had been driving it this way for 30,000 miles!!! and the truck had 515,000 miles! This says a lot about the 99-03 Powerstrokes. We also did 2 injectors in this truck and the valve cover had never been removed! Here's a pic of what was causing most of the noise, the flexplate wa... [More]

6.0l Powerstroke VT365 turbo sticking

by aj 2. May 2012 00:08
Hey guys this is AJ with 441 Diesel. I've covered the issue with 6.0 turbos sticking in the past but I wanted to do another blog since now we are seeing more and more turbos beyond reconditioning. This truck was a 2005 F-650 with the IH VT365 engine. These turbos actually have a smaller compressor wheel than the Powerstrokes but they still have just as many problems. This particular truck would run fine with good power but as you got higher in the RPMs in overdrive the check engine light would come on for excessive exhaust pressure and I noticed the turbo was boosting 30 psi which is way over the normal range. The further I drove the less power the truck had until I limped it back to the shop running 6 psi of boost with my foot to the floor... [More]
